Today I thought I’d share some of my all time favourite laptop apps, which have only become more important recently now that we have all been spending more time online. These apps all function to streamline my workflow and make me more time-effective.
Notion (FREE) – Notion is an incredible organisational tool and ever since discovering it, I have slowly replacde most other apps I was previously using with Notion. For me, it’s a place where I write notes in medical school, plan my projects and tasks, keep a journal, track my finances and so much more. It is everything you could ever want in one place!
Alfred (FREE) – Alfred is easily the app that has saved me the most time out of all those listed in this newsletter. Simply put, it allows you to search your Mac and the internet quickly without using your mouse. You can customise it by adding custom actions and shortcuts, which is incredibly helpful! If you only use one app from this list, I would recommend this one first.
Speechify (FREE – limited features) – This app does exactly what it says on the tin: it converts text into speech. When I first heard about it, I wasn’t convinced by the idea, but then I tried it out. By simply uploading a PDF file or installing the app as a browser extension, the app will read the text out. This is amazing to increase your reading speed while retaining the same amount of information!
ANKI (FREE) – ANKI is a flashcard app, simply put. However, what makes it stand out from other flashcard apps is the amount of customisability it offers. I use it for memorising small pieces of information (rather than whole processes) and learning the labels of diagrams. This has been invaluable in medical school and I would recommend it to everyone trying to learn something new. I recently started using it for learning vocabulary in other languages and it’s incredible for that purpose too.
TextSniper (£6.49😰) – This app became invaluable during online lectures and when watching YouTube videos. Rather than spending the whole time trying to frantically write down everything from the slides before they disappear, this app allows you to take a screenshot of part of your screen and the text in that picture is automatically copied. You can then paste it into whatever app you are taking notes with!
